Projecting Video Streaming Cost in Your Business plan

I have always enjoyed having video as one of the media components in my projects or presentations. Many years ago it was a challenge to get video to work from a disk with limited CPU cycles and video cards, not to mention extremely limited bandwidth. Yet, video always added so much to the project that it was well worth the extra work.

As the years have gone by and disk as a delivery mechanism is a thing of the past, the internet has made it possible to provide a much richer experience. But, when you try to create a business plan, and you need to project revenue and expenses for 3 or more years, there are still many challenges.

Uplynk has the most straight forward pricing you will ever find—time based! You measure your encoding, storage and streaming based on time, which is great—a unit of measure we can all understand.

Most companies in the video streaming market offer a variety of packaged services, which work well for some businesses. However, the challenge is that most of the packages are measured in gigabytes, or transfer rates, etc. This makes it very hard to forecast cost and determine an accurate price point for your services or product. How do you predict gigabytes in a world where we deliver video to so many different devices—Macs, PCs, desktops, laptops, mobile devices, streaming boxes, video streaming boxes, game console, etc.

Enter Uplynk, a new company with an exciting technology with a straightforward pricing plan. Uplynk features an adaptive stream, you encode one time (no equipment needed other than your current computer), you store economically just what you need—one version of your video—and stream to all devices. The video is HD by default and adaptable when the conditions require a lesser experience. And, for those of us who have to deal with the financial aspects of an operation, Uplynk has the most straight forward pricing you will ever find—time based! You measure your encoding, storage and streaming based on time, which is great—a unit of measure we can all understand. Even better, you only pay for what you use. No pre-set contract, Uplynk works with all ad services and includes DRM. There are plenty of other goodies but you can check them out at www.Uplynk.com. Uplynk was recently acquired by Verizon (good move, Verizon), which means they likely to even further expand their services in the days ahead.

There are other good companies in the space that also provide great services, but I think Uplynk gets my vote for ease of use, easy to understand pricing, and great service. I worked with Ralf Jacob, their CEO years ago, and I was always impressed with his work ethic, dedication, and knowledge. Now, together with a great team, he has delivered a very special service to the market. If you are looking for a good streaming provider and great partner, check these guys out. You will not be disappointed. ESPN, Disney, and other giants in the industry seem to agree with me. Check out my blog tomorrow to learn about another great video technology.

    Let’s Talk All Things Digital

I have been operating North South Studios since September 25, 2004. I have worked in digital publishing and content development for many years. I have transitioned from CD-I, to CD- ROM, and endured the OS wars between Apple and Microsoft. Today I actively develop and produce mobile apps for iOS and Android (with Google replacing Microsoft in the latest operating system battlefield).

Having a software development company that functions like a small agency has provided me with amazing opportunities. I have worked on business oriented sites, learning products, interactive toys, games, mobile applications, implemented CMS’s and LMS’s, worked on Digital Rights Management, video streaming and more.

I think this is an exciting time for many Americans. We have an opportunity to revolutionize the way services are offered and delivered worldwide.

If you work in software or content development in the digital world you know that just when you think you have seen it all, wham! Something new just pops up. Sadly I have seen many businesses fail, and most of them for the same foreseeable reasons. I decided to start this blog because I wanted to share my experiences in digital publishing with young and established executives. I wanted to write about real best practices, results oriented techniques, and proven technologies. I have been blessed with meeting incredible smart and hardworking people; I plan on bringing their experiences into my blog as well.

I think this is an exciting time for many Americans. We have an opportunity to revolutionize the way services are offered and delivered worldwide. Publishing content about your experience, entertaining others, and monetizing your assets has never been easier, but with such amazing options, the road to success is indeed filled with peril at every corner.

I hope this blog helps readers save time and money, and contributes to their success. My goal is to make this a valuable timely resource for entrepreneurs, technical directors, project managers, and media executives.

I am grateful to you for taking your time to read this introductory posting. I promise you I will introduce you to a really cool and exciting technology in my next posting.  Your support and feedback is valued and appreciated.

Next week, I wanted to share some tips on how to select and manage outsourcing services whether they be offered by US third party developers such as agencies, or by near or offshore development partners.
